Hawai'i Insight Meditation Center - Conservation
The land has rich soil leeched from Kohala Mountain, the oldest part of Hawai'i Island. As cultural historians have long known and archaeologists are confirming, this land held thriving communities and was chosen by powerful leaders of pre-modern Hawai'i. Starting in 2007 we began giving access to university archeologists and their students to areas on the land that possess these deep cultural roots for the Hawai'ian community. With their teams of students they have found the oldest signs of systematic agriculture in the Halawa Gulch: still intact lo'i reach down more than a fathom deep into the soil.
It is Vipassana Hawai'i's mission to continue this outreach and conservation work. In the same ways we honor the traditions set forth in the Buddha's teachings on wisdom and compassion, so too we seek to honor the stewardship of the land in Hawai'i.
